Running makes the Difference!

Origin CoffeeOctober 8, 2011 marked the 2nd annual 5k and 10k walk/run for the Run for Courage (RFC) organization. This race took place in Folsom, CA and brought out  a whopping number of 1720 runners and over 250 volunteers. These races, whether they are walked or sprinted, are known as “The Race to End Sex Trafficking”.

The amount of money raised has not been announced, but even if every runner had paid the smallest fee possible (pre-registered 5k runner on a team, $25), the race would have produced $43,000! RFC has several beneficiaries lined up to receive the profits: Agape International Mission (AIM), Courage to Be you (C2BU), WIND Youth Services, and  A New Day for Children.

This young, but successful non-profit organization was started by 11 women with a mutual passion. One of the eleven is a Mom and had recently experienced the trauma of having her daughter kidnapped and sold for sex for 8 days before being rescued. California is one of the states that has an incredibly high rate of sex-trafficking, especially in Sacramento. In the past, Highway 80′s exit at Watt Avenue was an ideal meeting place for pimps to sell victims to perpetrators because of the cheap motel rates that line Watt Avenue directly off the freeway. Although the spot has lost some of its secrecy, the location remains quite usable.

It is problems like these that need our undivided attention. Running does make the difference through RFC. It brings awareness to both the local and global issue and supports those organizations that are already working hard from many different angles.

RFC hosts multiple events throughout the year, check out their website at http://runforcourage.org/!
